The sci fi of the time reflects the trends of the time.

Examples:

RoboCop was at the time where corporations became mega sized and across markets.

Blade Runner was at the time when it seemed like Japan would end up the number one economy.

Children of Men was at a time where virus and genetic hype was at a maximum. It was also the time of many plague and zombie movies.

Even 1984 was written by Orwell about his own experiences in British intelligence in Indochina.

They wrote about what they saw in progress but look today and see how AI is only a glorified search engine and we can't even do anything with genetics 😂.

It's because the "geniuses" of society are obsessed over details/data instead of the big picture.

Here's the analogy depicted in Battlestar Galactica, a great sci fi show about how we would end up if we had an easy power source to do space travel.

Dear Man, I started with AYN RAND and spent years reading about what has been happening NOW. First contact will be soon and I will be the first Old Lady to go where no Old Lady has gone before. There may be a Fake Alien invasion that stirs up some fear porn but the Galactic Federation of Light will undo it before it looks real and we will finally meet our Galactic brothers and sisters. Stay tooned for the real thing!!

Ah Jan 👏 ditto on the Sci-fi but in Australia. Born in '60, i began reading scifi in 1971, Dad's awesome collection. Grey Lensman, SAVE US!!! 🙏 Heh. (Boskone as USSSR, I believe,). Authors seemed both visionary & curiously associated with suspect entities, a la Orwell & the Eugenicists. I think I was radicalised early, reading Stranger in a Strange Land, around '74, '75 (Heinlein).

Arthur C Clarke was the first to write of geo synchronous satellites, scientists were his teen readers.

My Sci-fi idea is that AGI was actually perfected by Babbage & that The City of London is well in the Game.... NOW is Harvest Time.

Also CK Cherryh. The clones & Learning “tape”. And the Corporatisation too. That only the pluticrats have worthy goals.

Too much exposure to the mind benders of Hollywood! At least if you read a book you can use your imagination (which may differ from other readers) however spoon fed Hollyblurb viewed en masse annihilates individual imagination and replaces it with global "right-think" - and that leads to global fear porn.

If we read Budd Hopkins and Dr David Jacobs and John Mack, we will understand the existing threat to humanity. Alien life is not rare but, from its behaviour, abundant and in need, as is our species, of new natural resources, clean water sources, forests, seas and beaches, having exploited their own worlds to exhaustion and collapse in the normal way, that being: the unimpeded growth paradigm. Hence the genetic manipulation for which the source material is the gametes obtained from abductions, to hybridise themselves in order to acclimatise to their new home. By analogy, looking to their intentions: they’re Israel and we’re Gaza. Since we developed the Bomb they’ve had the excuse to treat us all as terrorists and to plan to replace us. Like Israel, which an Israeli recently told me is very crowded, they need a bit of Lebensraum.
