Beware The Self-Assembling Panopticon
Last Saturday, a surveillance CEO told us how the rest of the century is going to go down. The only question left is whether we can still opt out with our skin on.
Imagine a world with no cabal, no boardroom, no hooded council working the levers of global domination — because the road to the digital abattoir has already been paved, and AI is doing the driving.
This past Saturday, April 18, 2026, Palantir dropped a 1,000-word document onto X titled Because we get asked a lot — The Technological Republic, in brief. Twenty-two numbered points that read less manifesto, more neon warning sign. Not a forecast of what may come, but an FYI of what will — delivered in the patient tone of an animal tester explaining the protocol to his bunnies. The post got twenty-one million views in seventy-two hours.
Among the points: universal conscription. The quiet re-militarization of Germany and Japan. The acceleration of AI weapons development. The domestic deployment of predictive crime-targeting tools. The open ranking of cultures and subcultures by civilizational worth. And so on. We’ll get back to that.
If you haven’t heard of Alex Karp or Palantir yet, you are probably an Amazonian tree frog with no internet access, in which case none of the below will make sense to you anyway. Paddle away. Be happy. The lily pads are still safe.
The AI Overlords Who Look Like Startup CEOs — But Ain’t
So who is this guy, and what does his company actually do? Fair questions, given that one or the other is now running inside half the governments of the free world.
Alex Karp, 58, is the CEO of Palantir, whose official mission is “to scare enemies and on occasion, kill them.” You can watch him say this on YouTube. He’s smiling. In 2024 he told the New York Times the United States would “very likely” fight a three-front war with Russia, China, and Iran — a prediction he then used as the argument for accelerating autonomous weapons development, as if the prediction and the weapons existed in separate moral universes. He also believes AI must outgun nukes, because “the West is very unlikely to use anything like a nuclear bomb, whereas our adversaries might.” A bracing philosophy. Also a terrific sales pitch.
His company sells a single product under several names. The product is a data classifier. It swallows the fragments of your digital life — calls, movements, transactions, images, medical records, border crossings, late-night Reddit posts — and produces a ranked list of candidates for attention, for notice, or, on a bad Tuesday, for deletion.
Palantir is the grown-up version of something called Total Information Awareness, a Pentagon program that got launched in the post-9/11 adrenaline haze — back when we were still buying the fairy tale about bad guys with weapons of mass destruction hiding under Iraqi beds (talk about Freudian projection). The original pitch was simple: vacuum up every digital trace of the human population, fuse it into one searchable database, and preempt the bad actors before they’d even decided to be bad. Congress shut the public program down in 2003. The same year Palantir was founded, funded by the CIA’s venture-capital arm. Which, if you’re keeping score, is not a coincidence.
Remember watching Minority Report with a bag of popcorn and thinking it was a scary depiction of the future? The real thing scales worse. Palantir’s algorithms already chew through your taxes, your healthcare records, your social media, your consumer habits, your political leanings — citizen or terrorist, no distinction at the query layer. If the classifier decides you don’t fit, the notice arrives in the form of a welfare check, a deportation notice, or an airstrike. The software doesn’t know which. Contrary to what people in the early stages of AI psychosis believe, AI doesn’t think or feel. It sorts. And acts on the sorting.
Palantir’s software is currently running programs inside the Israeli Defense Forces, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the NYPD’s predictive policing unit, the UK’s National Health Service (patient records and immunization rollouts), the entire IRS database (flagging taxpayers for audit), the Ukrainian armed forces in what Time magazine dubbed the AI war lab, and the Pentagon’s Maven Smart System, which is currently selecting targets inside Iran. Maven alone spreads its wings across five combatant commands — Central (CENTCOM), European (EUCOM), Indo-Pacific (INDOPACOM), Northern (NORTHCOM), and Transportation (TRANSCOM) — which together cover most of the inhabited planet.

The real question, though, is not what the software does. We know what the software does. The real question is what kind of mindset is driving it, what belief system, if any, sits behind the wheel. And whether there is any argument that gets through.
How Did We Get Here, Asked Alice In Wonderland
I first started chewing on this during the covid circus. I’d camped out in a Portuguese surfer village, reading too much, taking notes, and writing a piece I eventually called Minds In the Shadows: The Shaping Of Mass Perception. Main question: what is this shit all about?
What I discovered was that the doctrine of behavioral control of the masses is as common, as studied, and as enthusiastically theorized about as wine cultivation. It is not a classified black project. It is an academic field. A hundred years of work by luminaries, literary giants, and thinkers we’d always assumed were just ordinary brilliant men, quietly producing the intellectual blueprint for managing populations the way a sommelier manages a cellar.
Fine. But what did any of that have to do with Palantir? That connection clicked the moment I read one sentence in Alex Karp’s bio:
Karp earned his Ph.D. at Goethe University in Frankfurt in 2002. His field — he calls it “neoclassical social theory” — grew out of the Frankfurt School, a group of German thinkers who spent the 20th century asking one big question: how do modern societies get people to go along with things they would otherwise resist?
Frankfurt School. Right. I went back to my notes.
The Frankfurt Four
The Frankfurt School wasn’t a school in the normal sense. It was the Institute for Social Research — Institut für Sozialforschung — founded in 1923 and attached to Goethe University Frankfurt, bankrolled by the son of a wealthy grain merchant who wanted to understand why the German revolution of 1918 had failed. The Institute assembled a generation of German-Jewish philosophers, sociologists, and psychoanalysts and pointed them all at one question: how does modern power get inside a human head without asking first? Marx on their left, Freud on their right, Weber behind, Hegel watching from the ceiling.
They drank from that river until Hitler arrived in 1933, at which point most of them fled — first to Geneva, then to Columbia University in New York, where their work continued on Rockefeller, Ford, and American Jewish Committee money. The core returned to Frankfurt in 1951. The detail that matters, and this is the load-bearing one: during the American exile years, the Frankfurt School’s funding ecosystem became indistinguishable from the funding ecosystem of U.S. intelligence, postwar behavioral science, and the emerging Tavistock network in London. Same foundations. Same dinners. Same committees.
The first generation produced what we can, without much stretch, call the Frankfurt Four — Adorno, Horkheimer, Marcuse, Habermas. Their mindset and Alex Karp’s mindset rhyme uncomfortably.
Theodor W. Adorno (1903–1969) spent his career listening to the radio and noticing something strange. The feeling a pop song put in your chest wasn’t really yours. It had been manufactured, packaged, and delivered on a schedule. The hit single, the matinee film, the jingle — not entertainment. Pre-chewed experience. Installed into you before you’d even noticed the needle going in. He called the whole apparatus the culture industry. Then, helpfully, he built a test — the F-scale — that ranked human beings by how easily they could be pushed around by the messages the industry was selling. A personality questionnaire. A sorting instrument. A sociologist in 1950, with a clipboard and a stack of Xeroxes, inventing the mechanism that ranks populations by how they can be manipulated. He didn’t have the computers to run it at scale. He had the concept. Eighty years later, Palantir’s software does the same thing in milliseconds. Adorno wrote the spec. Silicon Valley shipped the product.
Max Horkheimer (1895–1973) went bigger. Enlightenment thinking — the whole project of reason, science, and argument that Europe had been trusting since the 1700s — was supposed to free people from superstition and tyranny. Horkheimer’s verdict: it had done the opposite. The tools of liberation had become the tools of capture. The school, the expert, the rational institution — all apparatus of control dressed up as progress. The cage had gotten finer, not looser. And then, in 1948, Horkheimer did the thing that matters for our story. He walked into a London conference room and, next to a British psychiatrist named John Rawlings Rees — founder of the Tavistock Clinic, a London outfit that had spent the previous twenty years studying how to shape group behavior under wartime pressure — co-founded the World Federation for Mental Health. UN-adjacent. UNESCO letterhead. Stated mission: global mental health policy. Europe’s leading philosopher of invisible control sat down with Britain’s most operational behavioral psychiatrist and signed a charter to manage the mental life of the species. Public documents. No secrecy required. This is the handshake. The philosophy from Frankfurt meets the operations from London, and they start sharing stationery.
Herbert Marcuse (1898–1979) looked at the American supermarket and the 1960s protest movements and saw the same machine in both places. Consumer capitalism, he argued, had figured out something earlier systems hadn’t. It didn’t need to suppress rebellion. It could absorb it. Your anger at the system became a t-shirt. Your critique of the war became a record album. Your desire for liberation became a lifestyle brand. The system stayed intact because it ate every form of opposition and sold it back to you, usually at a markup. He called this repressive tolerance. Which brings us to the detail that most sympathetic biographies tiptoe around: from 1942 to 1951, Marcuse was on the payroll of the Office of Strategic Services — the wartime precursor to the CIA — and afterward the U.S. State Department. Nine years on the intelligence payroll. The man who taught two generations of American leftists to see through the machinery of invisible control did so while drawing a paycheck from the people running it. Not a double agent. Not a mole. Just a guy with a day job. The Frankfurt School was never a closed circle standing outside the power structure. Its most influential voices were inside the building. Typing up reports.
Jürgen Habermas (1929– ) arrived last, saw the wreckage his teachers had left behind, and tried to put reason back together with glue and good intentions. If rationality had been twisted into a tool of domination, maybe it could be twisted back — pointed toward mutual understanding, honest dialogue, deliberative democracy. He called it communicative rationality. The idea that humans talking to each other in good faith could rebuild legitimate political order. The most optimistic thread in the Frankfurt story. Also, looking around at 2026, the thread that didn’t hold. Habermas is still alive. He held the philosophy chair at Goethe University Frankfurt from 1964 to 1971, and again from 1983 to 1994. He was still giving occasional lectures down the hall when a young American graduate student named Alex Karp walked into the department in 1996 to begin his Ph.D.
The Cobweb
Here is what the map actually looks like once you lay it flat on the table. Four philosophers in Frankfurt, one clinic in London, one black-budget program in Langley, and one long-running conference series in New York. No single meeting where they all sat down together, no document anybody signed in blood, no hooded council passing gavels. Just a shared funding ecosystem — Rockefeller, Ford, Macy, Carnegie, the usual suspects — a shared quiet assumption that human consciousness is an engineering substrate available for study, and three decades of overlapping committees, wartime intelligence friendships, and cross-disciplinary journals all rowing in roughly the same direction.
Add the darker thread, the one that stayed tucked underneath the academic conversation until the Church Committee dragged it into daylight in 1975: the CIA’s MK-ULTRA program, 1953 to 1973, one hundred and forty-nine subprojects spread across roughly eighty universities, hospitals, prisons, and pharmaceutical companies. LSD dosings on unwitting subjects, electroshock, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, the full laboratory catalog. One of the Harvard undergraduates roped into a CIA-linked stress experiment — run by a psychologist named Henry Murray, who had spent the war at the OSS alongside our old friend Marcuse — was an angry young mathematician named Ted Kaczynski. He’d later mail bombs. Cause and effect are impossible to prove in any one case, but the biography is not reassuring. Call MK-ULTRA the industrial pilot program and the picture clarifies: Frankfurt had the theory, Tavistock had the protocol, MK-ULTRA had the black budget and twenty uninterrupted years to find out how far the engineering substrate would actually stretch. Same project, different building, better financing, and far fewer journalists asking questions.
And then there’s the Macy Conferences, 1941 to 1960, a closed New York meeting series where cyberneticians like Norbert Wiener and John von Neumann sat elbow-to-elbow with anthropologists like Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson, a handful of psychiatrists later linked to MK-ULTRA, and a rotating cast of OSS and CIA intelligence officers. Twenty years of quiet cross-pollination, mostly catered, and the intellectual foundation it produced — cybernetics, systems theory, and the information-processing model of the human mind — underpins basically every behavioral technology that has been built since.
By 1970 the cobweb was structurally complete, and by 2003 — the year Palantir was founded with In-Q-Tel seed money, which is to say with a check from the CIA’s venture arm — it was operational and quietly waiting for somebody to show up with a software layer.
Alex Karp, as it happens, walked into Goethe University Frankfurt in 1996 and absorbed all of it. He read the Frankfurt tradition carefully enough to be unsettled by it, which meant reaching for Talcott Parsons, the American functionalist, to pry himself loose from Adorno’s conclusions and write his own. His dissertation argued, in essence, that aggression isn’t a flaw in human society — it’s the adhesive that holds the thing together, and shared enemies are how groups remain groups over time. A tidy inversion of the Frankfurt worry: instead of diagnosing how control gets installed in a population, he described the mechanism by which it could be operated at scale. A decade later, he shipped the software that operated it.
Here is the punchline, and it quietly eats my 2023 thesis for breakfast. The pattern didn’t require a cabal. It required a credentialing system (running since 1923), a funding alignment (running since 1942), and enough generations of memetic drift to make the ambient assumption unquestionable by the time anyone noticed. No hooded council was ever necessary. The old conspiracy framework, frankly, lets the rest of us off the hook — if they’re running the show, then we’re bystanders with clean hands. If nobody is running it, on the other hand, we are the operating system. I keep the maybe on this because anyone claiming certainty in either direction is flinching.
The Most Terrible Idea In All Of This
There is a basic human need to nail a culprit. The Greeks blamed Poseidon for shipwrecks and Zeus for thunder. The medieval peasant blamed Jews, witches, or the Devil for the plague. The Azande in East Africa attributed misfortune to neighbors practicing sorcery. Every culture, every era, needs a face to point at when the crop fails or the child dies.
Today, roughly twelve million Americans — about 4% of adults, per a Public Policy Polling survey — believe a race of shapeshifting reptilian humanoids from the Draco constellation controls world events through bloodlines that include most heads of state, the British royals, and a rotating cast of pop stars. Another large slice of the population attributes the same events to the Rothschilds, the Bilderberg Group, the World Economic Forum, or a Vatican-adjacent cabal of pedophile elites drinking adrenochrome in pizza parlor basements. The face changes. The psychological need does not.
Most of us, at some level, believe in a shadow government run by elites pursuing their own agenda. That belief is not wrong in at least some angle — rich people do coordinate, committees do exist, Davos is a real place with a real guest list. But here is the harder idea, the one that emerges from reading the Frankfurt-to-Palantir genealogy end to end: the system the luminaries built has become autonomous. It has its own gravity. Its own incentive structure. Its own recruitment pipeline. And increasingly, its own directive intelligence — AI expanding at a logarithmic clip on the principles Adorno sketched with a pencil in 1950.
The terrible idea is this: there may be no face left to point at. The shadow government, if it ever really was one, has been replaced by a self-executing program that does not need its authors anymore.
The Question of Escape
So can an individual still get out.
I’ve paced the floor on this one, and the honest answer is that the 1960s version — drop out, go to the mountains, live in a bus — is a period piece now. There is no commune remote enough. The grid is satellite, the grid is atmospheric, the grid is baked into the salt on your table and the fuel in your tank. The mountains and the library and the rifle make for a lovely photograph, but the trail follows you out there. Your face is already in a classifier you’ll never get to inspect. Your dental records filed themselves years ago. Walking away buys you slower integration, not separation, and the difference matters.
What’s left is smaller and stranger, and it’s the kind of thing you can’t really put on a t-shirt. Cut the scroll. Go back into your body — the sunlight, the walking, the food that came from a field instead of a factory, a nervous system that can still tell an emergency apart from a push notification, because a dysregulated body is a compliant body and the algorithm has known this longer than you have. Rebuild the three a.m. list, the ten people who’d actually pick up the phone and drive over and stay till morning, because that’s the last unit of human society the software can’t price, only guess at. And keep a practice, whatever yours is — prayer in the old way, or meditation, or an hour in the woods with no camera, or creative work that you make for nobody — because that’s the daily reassembly of the self the matrix is working around the clock to dissolve, and if you stop assembling it, the matrix assembles something else in its place and hands it back to you wearing your face.
And then there’s the part of this nobody talks about in polite company, which is that somewhere underneath all of the above there’s already a quieter rebellion running. Not the kind with flags or manifestos. A different kind of cabal. A loose confederation of technovisionaries who took the same tools the state is now using to sort you, and built them sideways instead. Bitcoin in cold wallets that the invoicing department cannot see. Nodes humming away on solar rigs in Paraguayan jungles and Salvadoran mountain villages, bouncing signals through mesh networks instead of telecom cables the agencies have been inside since 2003. Nostr relays that cannot be deplatformed because there is no platform, only a protocol. Value moving peer to peer, no clerk in the middle, no audit trail for the ranker to chew on. Parallel rails. Decentralized by design. The same technology the centralized system is betting its whole deck on, turned inside out by the handful of people who actually understood what it was for in the first place.
Is any of this enough. Of course not. The matrix is capitalized, integrated, running in milliseconds, and every practice I’ve named is slow and small and analog and the kind of thing your grandmother would have recognized. The asymmetry is honest and brutal and anyone selling you a clean answer is selling you a product. But the alternative — sitting still, waiting to be classified, trusting the system to be kind on the particular Tuesday morning it comes looking for you — that isn’t an alternative.
Because let’s be honest. All of this is just too maddeningly, elegantly brilliant to be anything other than a Grand Simulation running on some cosmic server farm. And if that's the case — if somebody is actually scoring this thing — my best guess is that the Programmers are grading us on the original acts, the humane moves under robotic pressure, the courage under hopelessness, and the ability to laugh, out loud and unironically, at the Alex Karps of the world.

Excellent! I wonder why Karp’s 22s are so incoherent, broken language, trigger wordy (so non-Frankfurt school), I suspect on purpose to use the public outcry to conceal the interative implementation of the „real vision“, this guy is not stupid. Same flood the zone with shit procedure.
The only antidote is humaneness, the deep touching encounter between humans, kama muta. And build from there.
