fake news

Fake news has become one of the most quoted catchwords in modern media and politics. Social media platforms are purging people and companies that are purportedly connected to fake news. What is going on here? What is actually driving the fake news phenomenon?

David Rand, a behavioral scientist at MIT, proposes that fake news is driven by lazy thinking. Observational reality begs to differ. Think of a spectrum of people who have been faked out by some of the recent fake news. Smart and diligent people seem to fall for the spin on “premium” news sites at least as hard as less diligent people on shadier sites, whether the topic is about foreign enemies, terrorists or lizards wearing suede pants in presidential campaigns. The only difference is that diligent thinkers are better in rationalizing – and thereby propagating – the fake news.

Which means that something other than lazy thinking must drive fake news. Here is my stab at the actual drivers.

Alhough the catchphrase is recent, fake news guided our behavior ever since we climbed down from a tree and initiated a conversation. The first human grunt was fake news, used to distract another furry creature long enough to steal a nut collection. A weapon of distraction.

Way before the onset of the first alphabet, men in long garbs and mushroom-shaped hats told us fake news about divine despots who would flambé us if we didn’t sponsor them with goats, damsels and/or silver coins, stuff that never actually wound up with the divine despot. Clear embezzlement.

Rulers with glitzy headsets freaked us out with fake news about foreign invaders, forcing us to pay a ransom for peace and safety; and when that failed, to throw life, limb and offspring into securing the king’s domain. Sovereignty.

Both kings and preachers were victims of fake news themselves, spun by an even fiercer breed of storytellers who showered different versions of fake news to both sides of the conflict, along with the tools and financing to flambé each other. Evil Genius.

The same drivers roll in fake news today, the difference being that we’re now dealing with lightspeed fake news. A big portion of the recent surge is also about eliminating real news by faking them out as fake news, case in point being the current social media purge (see list at bottom). Lobotomy.

But the mystery goes deeper. All drivers have a prime driver, which is the root reason why fake news is able to sculpt human history. It leverages the most powerful biochemical principle to control human behavior.

Fear activates the fight-or-flight nervous system, which in turn tells the adrenal system to produce stress hormones to flood our limbs with extra blood and energy, so we can run and flail faster when our life depends on it. The catch is that the extra energy has to come from somewhere else, and in the human body it happens to be the immune system and the frontal lobe. One protects our health, the other runs conscious thought, both being excruciatingly slow to handle wild beast encounters.

The catch is that fear will continue as long as the signals – fake or real – keep pointing to the beast. Which brings us to the alchemy of fake news. To instill fear in any shape or form which makes us sicker and less conscious.

Sicker means less energy to do the things we really want to do. Less conscious means not knowing what we want to do in the first place. So instead we do whatever we’re told.

The misalignment wears cells inside out, slow enough to be missed in regular health checkups. It nudges energy deeper into fight-or-flight, which we band-aid with the usual distractions, possessions and codependent relationships.

The shaky firmament bolsters our convictions, Us vs. Them and Me vs. Them. Insulated to the bone, we split from the one commune that could reign in the mad king, slowly depleting the super-organism known as humanity, just like humans deplete when their cells react to fear signals.

Think about it. The ability to control the masses is an evolutionary meme, it’s the oldest weapon of mass distraction out there, and it is in itself completely unconscious.

Nineteen out of twenty seconds we’re playing back behaviors we copied from other people by the time we were six years old. Fight-or-flight takes over the remaining second, when we’re supposed to be thinking for ourselves. Our parents copied the same gameplay from their parents, and so did their parents.

Look at the mirror reflection between 1914 and 2018. Same fake news. Same fake enemies. Same nappy fears.

All of this is theory, but what if part of it was true?

If you experience symptoms of fake news, take two capsules of doubt with your meal for the next thirty days, examine your favorite convictions. Ask who wrote the screenplay and why.

Doubt comes from the conscious mind. Conviction doesn’t.
